Sex Life of a Panda

I read the other day that a panda only had sex for 48 hours in an entire year. Poor panda I thought, just 2 days of nookie a year.

However if you think about it, 48 hours equates to about one hour a week or maybe a couple of ‘half-hour sessions’ a week. Not bad really.

I’m sure many married men will think he’s a bit of a lucky b****d.

A Show too Far

live-earthI have huge sympathy for the Live Earth organisers – how do you get complex messages across to a mass audience, to effect behaviour, educate and cause political movement on difficult issues.

The answer is that it’s not easy. For example, nuclear power seems a sensible solution to minimising green house gasses however some of the bands wore t-shirts opposing it.

And if music is the answer then presumably the bigger the bands on stage, the better the success. In which case having Duran Duran (re-heated left-overs from the Diana concert the week before) is not a good sign.

During a prolonged instrumental segment by Genesis its very hard to justify humaity’s right to live much longer on this planet.

You’re left feeling that Sir Bob Geldof was right – its just another pop concert – and not a very good one at that.

Great but not Green

787.jpg

The 787 looks great and certainly has some amazing technology – however green it is not.

A 20% reduction in fuel consumption must be welcomed but to promote it in terms of its environmentally friendliness is to mis-represent the real costs of air travel.

Carbon Offset? Plant more Ugli Trees!

How many Ugli Trees do you need to plant to offset your return flight to Florida?

Well the sad truth is that you probably can’t. Once you’ve burnt the hydrocarbons to get you across the Atlantic there’s no easy way to get it back into the ground again. The Genie is out of the bottle.

However, there are lots of companies that will gladly take your money in order to make you feel better about your impact on the future of the planet. Unfortunately there is no way of auditing these schemes and no way of guaranteeing that a tree grown one year doesn’t go up in smoke the next.

While the phony nature of carbon offsetting maybe hard to debunk – some guys in Wales have produced a great spoof website that explains it better than any scientist could. See www.cheatneutral.com.

A Virgin? I don’t believe you

Sir Richard BransonSo Richard Branson has pledged billions of dollars over the next 10 years to help fight global warming. The original press coverage made it sound like a charitable gift to the world. On closer examination this is not quite the case.

My take is that this is more a shrewd business move than a cash hand out. Not only is this a wise investment in new sustainable energy sources, it has the added bonus of boosting the green credentials of the other Virgin brands – particularly the ones that fly people round the world – and out of it. In short, if Branson gets it right he’ll make even more money.

Does this make Richard Branson a bad person. Probably not. On balance we say well done Sir Richard – now cancel your space flights

Uglie Tree Rating: In Space – you can’t hear Tubular Bells.
