European Champions

Obese KidsAs England’s footballers meet some tougher opposition in the European Cup and are shown wanting, it’s good to know that there is one league where we remain defiantly the best in Europe and sit proudly at the top of the table. I am of course talking about the Europen Obesity League.

And as the younger geneation of this great country sit in front of their play stations and shovel in processed food with chips – we can take heart in the fact that although we may be loosing a generation of fit healthy footballers and are condemning ouselves to mediocre football for years to come – we are at least guaranteeting our place at the top of this prestigious league.

Conspicuous Consumption

Jaguar XK8In a recent survey, the average horse power of all the cars reviewed by Jeremy Clarkson has been calculated at 318 bhp (in fact this has now gone up as today in the Times he reviewed a 500bhp Mercedes E Class AMG). This is enough power to accelerate the average semi-detached house from 0 to 60 in 6.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 157mph (or a Porsche Cayenne). Now I’m sorry, 100 bhp is really enough power for anyone yet Clarkson described the new Jaguar XK8 with 300bhp and a top speed of 160mph as being a “rather sluggish”.

We can’t complain I guess – we all have mountain bikes but spend all our time cycling on flat tarmac roads, we stroll to the shops in boots designed to conquer Everest and we keep our 4 wheel drive vehicles in town even though their purpose is to traverse the Gobi desert.

Ugli Tree Rating: Give up hopes of owning a Porsche and cycle to work in your plimsoles.

Tesco – every little helps themselves

TescoOur local post office applied for planning permission to have a cash machine (ATM) outside their shop. Before it was granted Tesco opened a new Metro shop over the road and installed their own ATM without any permission – wrecking the post office’s chance of some no doubt needed income.

Could this be a clue to how Tesco now manages to make £2 billion profit?

Ugli Tree Rating: The prices are good but what is the cost?

Peter Pan 2

In 1929 Peter PanJM Barrie gifted his royalties in Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital. These royalties should have expired by now but were exteended indefinitely in the UK and extended in the US until 2023. They do however expire in Europe next year. With this in mind a new book has just been launched to raise more money for this great hospital: Peter Pan In Scarlet.

We say – good luck with the new book.

Ugli Tree Rating: Not to be confused with the horrible Spielberg film “Hook” starring Robin Williams.

City Hall, London

City Hall and Tower BridgeHas anyone noticed that someone has plonked a huge gold fish bowl in one of London’s most historic parts.

While the Millau Viaduct is one of the wonders of the modern engineering world – Norman Foster deserves less praise for this building – in fact a week in the stocks at the Tower of London opposite would be more appropriate

Gold Fish KenWe don’t subscribe to the Prince Charles school of architecture but Sir Norman could take a few cues from Tower Bridge. Despite being only a 100 years old – it has acheived iconic status as one of the great symbols of London. I would be surprised if CityHall will be seen the same way in 2106.
